EMDR Therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been well researched and shown to be effective in helping people heal from disturbing life events. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The method involves a structured 8 phase protocol that accesses the mind and body’s natural healing process. There has been extensive research done over the past 30 years demonstrating that EMDR can be helpful in healing from traumatic events such as auto accidents, physical assault, and combat. Research has also been demonstrating that EMDR Therapy can be helpful in working with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and other challenges. EMDR Therapy has been designated as an effective treatment by several international mental health organizations.
When something disturbing happens, it can get stuck in the nervous system with the original image, thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. Even though the event is over, the unprocessed memories can continue to cause distress, self-limiting beliefs, and negative behavioral patterns. EMDR Therapy is designed to help you identify experiences that feel stuck in your mind and body, and to help process the experiences in a healthy way, leading to feeling unstuck. The mind and body have natural abilities to heal through processing and integration of information, and EMDR Therapy helps access this process in a safe and structured way.
EMDR Therapy is different from traditional talk therapy. EMDR Therapy uses a method known as Dual Attention Stimulation (DAS) which involves guided eye movements, tapping, headphones with sounds, or hand pulsars, depending on your preference (we will find what is most comfortable for you). The DAS helps with the process of unlocking the nervous system and allows you to process information in a positive way. EMDR therapy does not erase your memories. However, EMDR Therapy can help you remember events without feeling the disturbing feelings that had previously been reoccurring. EMDR Therapy can also help you reprocess all aspects of disturbing information into an adaptive and useful resolution, so you can live to your fullest potential.
